“I Tried It!”

Rochester Hy-Vee dietitians Kathy, Kayley and Sara took part in the School Age Child Care (SACC) “I Tried It” event at three different elementary schools on July 31.  Each dietitian was assigned to a Rochester elementary school: Ben Franklin, Sunset Terrace and Gage.  Each of the schools included approximately 250 students.

During this presentation children used their five senses to learn about a variety of fruits and vegetables. After learning about the produce, they had the opportunity to try each one to see how they taste.  Each dietitian brought rainbow baby carrots, cauliflower, jicama, pomegranate seeds and mango.  Students were encouraged to try a new fruit or vegetable and received an “I Tried It” sticker.

Balloon Brigade Brings Smiles Beyond the Aisles

Not everyone is lucky enough to be home for the holidays.  That was the inspiration behind Hy-Vee img_565511Rochester’s Balloon Brigade.

The goal was to deliver 1,000 balloons to children undergoing treatment in our community. The good news is that we surpassed that goal.

December 1 through December 11, customers were invited to donate a balloon valued at $5, $10 or $15 at checkout.  Then, on December 19, a team of Hy-Vee helpful smiles delivered a grand total of 1,467 balloons to children at Mayo Clinic, St. Mary’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.

The reactions were priceless and the smiles were absolutely contagious.  What a simple way to spread cheer this holiday season.

We are so thankful for the generosity of Hy-Vee customers who made this happen and we look forward to an even bigger Balloon Brigade next year.

Hy-Vee Supports FEAST! Local Foods Marketplace

This past weekend, your Rochester Hy-Vee stores participated in the third annual FEAST! Local Foods Marketplace at the Mayo Civic Center.  img_4237

The FEAST Local Food Network is a partnership of many organizations, businesses, and individuals committed to growing a sustainable, local and regional food system which encourages innovation.  Friday’s industry-only tradeshow event offered Hy-Vee an opportunity to network with local food producers, in hopes to increase the number of local products you will find on store shelves.  Saturday’s festival showcased Hy-Vee as a destination for health and wellness.

The Hy-Vee dietitians’ booth offered attendees a chance to learn more about KidsFit – a fun, free, at-home fitness program designed for kids and their families to incorporate exercise, nutrition and general health into their daily lives. img_8090The Roll-the-Dice game was a hit with both children and adults who completed burpees, push-ups, sit-ups and more, all for a chance to take home a KidsFit water-bottle or KIND bar. They also had the chance to test their nutritional knowledge through the Mystery Fruit and Vegetable bag game – where they had to correctly guess Brussels sprouts, pomegranates and mangoes by relying solely on touch. A wide-variety of recipes and were also available for all to take home.
